Altered Books Wednesday July 22  4-6 pm

Altering books is about taking a used book and giving it new life.

An altered book artist takes a book (old, new, recycled or multiple) and cuts, tears, glues, burns, folds, paints, adds to, collages, rebinds, gold leafs, creates pop-ups, rubber-stamps, drills, bolts, and/or be-ribbons it. The artist may add pockets and niches to hold tags, rocks,  or other three-dimensional objects. Some change the shape of the book, or use multiple books in the creation of the finished piece of art.

Altered books may be as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page, or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture.

We will be taking used books and making  personal pieces of art and picture frames.

Inkheart and Animation Workshop

I can’t believe we are more than halfway through the summer reading program.  Where has the summer gone?  This week at GPL stay cool by watching a movie and creating a short animated movie.

inkheart_movie_posterWednesday July 15 from 4-6 pm we will be watching the  Inkheart based off the book Inkheart by Cordelia Funk.  Drinks and snacks will be served.

Friday July 17 from 4-6 pm is an animation workshop.  Lee Lacy will show us how to make a short animated clip. Think along the lines of South Park style or Monty Python style animation.  We will create stories using paper, celebrity paper dolls, googly eyes, weird flat foam shapes and other materials.  We then film the stories using a digital camera and edit them into a short movie using Windows Movie Maker.  Be prepared to work in small groups.   I would like to put the animated movies on the library website for everyone to see.

Both events are free and open to teens 12-18 years old.

Summer is Over!

11 copyOk, so summer is not over yet.  But the Fantastical: Teen Summer Reading Program is officially done.  Click here to see pictures from the various programs held throughout the summer.

The winners have been announced and the prizes awarded.  The art contest was a huge success with 47 entries.  It was really difficult to pick just 3 winners.  There were so many that  we felt more than three needed recognition so we added some honorable mentions.

And the winners of the Fantastical: Teen Summer Reading program Art Show are:

1st place went to Kayla M for her piece New Beginnig. Kayla won a $50 gift certificate to Hobby Lobby.

2nd place went to Jesse C for his piece Alaskan Lake.  Jesse won a $30 gift certificate to Hobby Lobby.

3rd place went to Ashton M .  Ashton won a $20 gift certificate to Hobby Lobby.

Honorable mentions were:

Cady B., Grace B., Shelby B., Zachary D., Kimberly H., Rose H., Candace W., Hannah W., Megan W.

The winners of the random drawings for the $50 gift certificates to Target and Best Buy were Colby F. and Stanley H.  Congratulations.

Thanks to every one for making the teen summer reading program a success.  Keep reading and don’t forget to stop by the library.
