Altered Books Wednesday July 22  4-6 pm

Altering books is about taking a used book and giving it new life.

An altered book artist takes a book (old, new, recycled or multiple) and cuts, tears, glues, burns, folds, paints, adds to, collages, rebinds, gold leafs, creates pop-ups, rubber-stamps, drills, bolts, and/or be-ribbons it. The artist may add pockets and niches to hold tags, rocks,  or other three-dimensional objects. Some change the shape of the book, or use multiple books in the creation of the finished piece of art.

Altered books may be as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page, or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture.

We will be taking used books and making  personal pieces of art and picture frames.

Inkheart and Animation Workshop

I can’t believe we are more than halfway through the summer reading program.  Where has the summer gone?  This week at GPL stay cool by watching a movie and creating a short animated movie.

inkheart_movie_posterWednesday July 15 from 4-6 pm we will be watching the  Inkheart based off the book Inkheart by Cordelia Funk.  Drinks and snacks will be served.

Friday July 17 from 4-6 pm is an animation workshop.  Lee Lacy will show us how to make a short animated clip. Think along the lines of South Park style or Monty Python style animation.  We will create stories using paper, celebrity paper dolls, googly eyes, weird flat foam shapes and other materials.  We then film the stories using a digital camera and edit them into a short movie using Windows Movie Maker.  Be prepared to work in small groups.   I would like to put the animated movies on the library website for everyone to see.

Both events are free and open to teens 12-18 years old.

For more information go to teensummer.georgetown.org or call  Bethni King at 930.9331 or email bking@georgetowntx.org

Iron Man and Zine Workshop

We will be watching Iron Man on Wednesday June 10 from 4-6 pm on a big screen.  Popcorn and sodas will be served.

Friday June 12 from 4-6 pm is the Zine Workshop.

You may be wondering what exactly is a zine?   Zine is short for magazine.  They are small, self published mini-magazines or home-made comics.  They can be on any subject and are a great way to express yourself and your interests.  They can be made by one person or many.  We will be making digest or half-page size zines.   We will make photocopies of your zines to display in the library throughout summer.

Don’t forget that there is also a Teen Art Show going on through June and July as part of the teen summer reading program.  First place is a $50 gift certificate to Hobby Lobby.  Stop by the libray for rules and a submission form.  Submission deadline is Sunday July 26, 2009.

PostSecret Art Project

Psst….I have a secret.  Blank spaces bother me.  I want to fill them up with something. Get rid of the bareness, the boringness.  So I have a problem.  GPL has three new display panels and they need something quick.

Solution- the PostSecret Art  Project.  The rules are simple.

  • Anyone in grades 6-12 can participate.
  • Anonymously contribute a secret on a postcard.  Make sure your name is nowhere to be seen.  It’s a secret after all.
  • Reveal anything- as long as it is true and you have never shared it with anyone before.
  • Be brief.  Be legible.  Be Creative.
  • Secrets should be postcard sized.
  • Drop them off at any Georgetown Public Library “mailbox” beginning March 1, 2009. Mailboxes are bright red and will be scattered throughout the library.
  • Postcards will be displayed in the library and online.

The secrets can be serious or funny.  Make the postcards on your own or stop by the Teen Space and create one.  Make sure to keep checking as new secrets will be posted throughout the month.

This project was inspired by the PostSecret books.  Check them out here.  My Secret: A PostSecret Book, A Lifetime of Secrets: A PostSecret Book, PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions From Ordinary Lives, The Secret Lives of Men and Women: a PostSecret Book
